Founded in 2020, The Halifax Helpers is a volunteer-run, youth-led tutoring program that offers free online academic support and English language learning to students from elementary through to high school. We are the Nova Scotia chapter of YouthInspirED Foundation, which helps young people establish similar programs across Canada.

The Halifax Helpers supports K-12 students across Nova Scotia who wish to receive supplementary academic support in a welcoming, low-pressure environment. Our services are free, virtual, and open to students with a wide range of learning needs and goals.

We support a wide range of subjects including Math, English, French, Science, Social Studies, and English as an Additional Language (EAL). A full list of subject offerings are available under the age group in which you wish to register on our website. You can choose the subject that best fits your academic needs when you book your session.

Any K-12 student (including caregivers booking on behalf of a child) can book sessions. No referral is required.

2. Each Sunday at 4PM, our tutors' weekly schedules are released.

3. Choose your grade level and the tutoring subject.

4. Pick a date and time that works for you.

5. Select a tutor and confirm your session.

6. You’ll receive an email confirmation with details. Sessions are held via Zoom.

Yes, all tutoring through The Halifax Helpers is 100% free, thanks to our volunteers and the YouthInspirED Foundation

The Halifax Helpers is a chapter of the YouthInspirED Foundation. Our chapter began in 2020, as a result of the COVID-19 Pandemic to provide accessible learning support for students completing at home learning. We now help students across Nova Scotia. YouthInspirED supports our work, and similar programs across the country by providing mentorship, funding, capacity building and governance resources.

Accessibility is a core value of The Halifax Helpers and YouthInspirED. We work to reduce barriers for both students and volunteers by offering virtual sessions, flexible scheduling, and support around technology and access whenever possible. If you require personalized assistance, please contact us and we will be happy to guide you to a tutor who is best suited to support your learning needs.

That’s okay. Many students book a single session just to try it out. There’s no long-term commitment, and sessions can be booked as needed.
